Papworth Davies worked in collaboration with Billard Leece Architects to re-develop Thomas Cherry Forecourt at Latrobe University in Bundoora.
The forecourt features a considerable existing central sculpture, registered with the National Trust, and the design has integrated this into a new deck and seating space. Papworth Davies undertook extensive site investigation and observation to inform the public square design response, as well as consultation with stakeholders within the University and the National Trust.
Working with a team of Architects and Engineers, our team led and co-ordinated the design of the project from the early concept phase through to detailed design and construction. The project features a number of creative responses including extensive permeable paving to preserve the existing stand of Red Gums, along with a sustainable decking material and new native planting. A terraced deck and custom seating forms a strong central feature around the existing sculpture and provides much needed amenity and improved social spaces for students and the nearby bus terminal.
The project was completed on time and on budget in December of 2016 and is now open to the public, ready for the new 2017 semester.
