Sunbury Quarry is large scale quarry and landfill site located in Melbourne’s outer western suburbs. Looking forward into the longer term, the operators of the quarry began a process of planning the staged phasing out of quarry and land fill operations, and the ultimate redevelopment of the land for residential and commercial use. Our team worked closely with the client and the strategic planners, Dominion Property Group, to consider the future potential of the site as the current quarry work gives over to land fill and the newer, higher tech waste recycling facilities.
Central to the success of the project was a review of the site’s drainage requirements given the surrounding property developments already approved, and the adjoining Emu Creek waterway. Emu Creek abuts the northern boundary of the site and features fantastic natural and ecological habitat assets including a steep ravine and notable bird species. Our role also involved extensive consultation with Melbourne Water to develop a concept for a new drainage corridor connecting the upstream developments, through the centre of the site to Emu Creek.
The ultimate long term vision for the site included both residential allotments and a new employment commercial precinct, along with a network of open spaces, parks and reserves, all connected to the surrounding landscape through the central drainage corridor. A prominent, existing heritage farm house located on an existing high point, was proposed as retained and integrated into the parks and open space scheme, connected to a network of walking and bicycle trails along the Emu Creek reserve edge.
