Papworth Davies worked closely with the owners of a private residential property in Melbourne’s bayside suburb of Brighton East to realise their vision for a transformed garden which complements the planned renovations to the building and offers new possibilities for outdoor entertaining and living.
The scheme includes a bold new pergola structure which will provide shade during the hot summer months and sets the scene for a new stone paved family entertaining space. The pergola design was developed using 3d modelling to optimise the balance between achieving much needed shade without imposing excess light loss to the internal living areas during the winter. The result is a strong, honest timber structure formed from lengths of Australian Hardwood battens supported by a chunky timber frame and fitting details.
The resolution of the site levels resulted in the introduction of a new seating wall which provides flexibility for a range of informal seating uses and defines the views to the garden from the house with stone paving, capping pieces and steps. The seating wall structure also supports the pergola columns and brings the elements together as one unified scheme. The result is a rejuvenated garden with clean architectural lines, quality finishes and vastly improved functionality.
The works, completed in February 2018, also included a general garden refresh with upgraded lawn and garden planting, the renovation of the existing pool and the integration of garden lighting features.
